Meet The Team – Sharon Kang

Meet Miss Sharon Kang, a Strategy Consultant here at KMG. Not only is she crowned the best dressed in the office but she donated 17 bags of unworn clothes recently to her grateful friends and colleagues. She is smart, kind and a Jenga champion. We sat down to discuss her role in the team.

Could you explain a little more about your position as a Digital Marketing Consultant?

My role predominately is to digitise businesses. In order to do this, I need a deep understanding of what the business needs from their marketing spend and put together a strategy that would help deliver the most return on advertising spend.  A huge part of this role is to have a deep understanding of my client’s business itself and how it operates alongside a wide knowledge of all online channels. It is a hybrid role, so I manage my accounts as well as acquire new business to build a personal portfolio of clients.

Describe a typical working day for you as a Digital Marketing Consultant at KMG?

My commute to the office is around 90 mins long, so I have some extra time to check my emails and prep for any meetings, I have that day. Once I am in the office, I find myself re-organising my to-do list in accordance to what is most urgent as opposed to what is most important. As mentioned, my role is two-fold and so half the day is dedicated to managing my current accounts and sitting down with the account management team, delivery team and clients to assess performance as well as uncovering new business opportunities and pitching for new accounts.

What made you go into digital marketing?

I have my own fashion label online and so I have a vested and personal interest in learning about all things digital.

Why do you like being a Consultant?

It is a very unique role that harbours a lot of key skills that I value: communication, problem-solving and deep analysis of data and trends.  I am plugged into so many different businesses from high-end lift companies to dermatology clinics so it is never a dull moment. I love how varied each project is and working out a strategy that can ultimately help a business grow.

What has been your favourite moment working at KMG?

Earlier this year we went on a Ski Trip to Chamonix and I have to say it has been one of the best trips I have ever taken.

What is the biggest challenge of being a Digital Marketing Consultant?

Finding a balance in my role especially with time management.

What are you excited about in digital at the moment?

I would say more intrigued…Ever since I did my thesis on the issues of sharing personal data online, I am very intrigued by the latest developments in the new trend of digital banking. Now with Brexit and not being privy to EU directives, GDPR, what other advancements will there be to replace and improve privacy laws since the Data Protection Act 1998?!

If you didn’t work in digital, where would you work?

Could be anything from a buyer for a fashion house to a consultant within a software company…

Where do you see KMG in 10 years?

With several offices globally, with a focus on KAU Labs and developing technology that helps read patterns and trends within datasets.

What do you do in your free time?

The nature of the business like my role is KPI led and so it’s quite intense. And so, my free time is mostly dedicated to unwinding and channelling my creativity through designing fusion wear for my Fashion label.

Give us an interesting fact about one of your colleagues.

Tessa used to swim for NZ competitively. She also represented her country for Irish dancing!

And Finally, in 3 words, how would your friends and family describe you?

Creative, determined and loyal.

Interview: An Interview with Sophie

Meet Sophie, KMG’s Head of Paid Social and go-to expert on all things Facebook & Instagram. She comes from the Land Down Under, which is obvious at the first sign of snow – you’ll find her jumping up and down excitedly at the office window!

Could you explain a little more about your position as Head of Paid Social at KMG?

So as Head of Paid Social I’m responsible for overseeing all of the social campaigns we run at KMG – whether that’s Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter or LinkedIn, you name it! My job is to keep on top of the latest developments in the paid social sector, train & develop the team, and make sure we’re implementing all the best practices to run winning social campaigns.

Describe a typical working day for you as Head of Paid Social at KMG?

First thing in the morning I’ll usually make a big cup of coffee and check the news and my top blogs for any developments – Facebook are releasing new features & reports almost every week at the moment. After that I’ll spend the day managing & optimising my accounts, for example, taking a deep dive into some audience data, setting up new campaigns or rolling out fresh creatives. Most days I’ll meet with other members of the team at KMG to review our social campaigns and make sure everything is in good shape and we’re driving great results for our clients.

What made you go into digital marketing?

I started my career in more traditional marketing, working on email campaigns & print advertising and so on. When I got my first taste of digital, I just loved it – you get immediate feedback on how your campaigns are performing, it combines analytical and creative skills, and it changes so quickly, there’s always something new to learn. From there it was a no-brainer to move into this industry.

Why do you like being Head of Paid Social?

Social media platforms, for better or worse, have completely changed the way we live our lives. I’ve been an almost daily Facebook user for 10 years, an Instagrammer for 7, and an advertiser for almost 5 years – I feel like I know these channels inside and out, and as Head of Paid Social, I can use that knowledge to help our clients. There is so much opportunity on social for businesses to grow and connect with their customers, and I love helping our clients maximise that opportunity.

What has been your favourite moment working at KMG?

From day one working at KMG has been awesome, it has the best culture and workplace environment I’ve ever experienced, but my favourite moment has got to be the ski trip. It was an absolute blast and we had the best time, and made me so glad to be part of the big KMG family.

What is the biggest challenge of being Head of Paid Social?

Keeping abreast of all of the changes happening in social advertising – there’s new features and best practices all the time. Keeping my knowledge up the date and ensuring we’re always updating our campaigns to try new things and incorporate new recommendations is a challenge.

What are you excited about in digital at the moment?

At the moment I’m particularly excited about WhatsApp joining the Facebook advertising platform (which at the moment includes Facebook, Instagram, Messenger & Audience Network). I think this is going to be a game-changer for UK businesses. Click-to-WhatsApp ads that take your customers directly to a WhatsApp conversation with you, so they can book in an appointment directly? Genius!

If you didn’t work in digital, where would you work?

Funnily enough, I think I’d be a vet! I’m an English major and love working in media, but my other passion is animals, and I think if I hadn’t gone down the road I have, I would have become a vet instead.

Where do you see KMG in 10 years?

I see KMG being the UK’s leading digital agency, with a bigger team, more happy clients, and international growth.

What do you do in your free time?

Like most Aussies living in London I love to travel, and try to cram in as many weekends away to Europe as I can.

Give us an interesting fact about one of your colleagues.

Aimee, one of our Account Managers, is actually a triple threat athlete—she used to do cheerleading, ice-skating & trampolining.

And Finally, in 3 words, how would your friends and family describe you?

Determined, energetic, and talkative.

An Interview with Abid

To round up a wonderful year, we are interviewing KMG’s COO Abid Masood. Abid co-founded KAU Media Group when he identified a niche in the Digital Media landscape, with the aim of providing an enterprise solution to small and medium sized businesses. At KMG, we call him the Absassin; He is an established entrepreneur who has held a number of high profile roles within Financial Services spanning over 15 years.

Could you explain a little more about your position as COO at KMG?

My role at KMG is to oversee the ongoing business operations of the company. What does that mean? That means being involved in business strategy, planning, forecasting, managing payroll, managing VAT returns / HMRC submissions, cost management, invoice management, contracts with suppliers and commercials, client communications, prioritising deliverables for our technology stack etc

In a nutshell, its my job to make sure we have more coming in than we have going out through the doors! That’s the underlying principle of any successful business.

What has been your favourite milestone for KMG as a business?

There’s been so many great milestones we’ve hit as a business since our humble beginnings at KMG! When we started operating as a business, getting paid by our first client was a great moment. It showed someone believed in us and the results we would deliver for them. Then we grew very quickly both in terms of client business and in our office headcount. It meant we had to find bigger premises to operate from. Moving into our current offices was a super milestone! Winning ‘Top Performing Agency, UK and Ireland’ by Google was an incredible achievement. And then in 2018 we made the finals across Europe for ‘Search Innovation’, competing with over 25,000 other agencies. We’ve just hit the ten million mark in terms of all time client revenues since inception. That’s another amazing milestone for what is still a young but well established business.

What has been your proudest moment in 2018?

Proud moments get incrementally better every year at KMG. Making the finals for the ‘Search Innovation’ award made us all super proud. To be recognised amongst the best across Europe cannot be understated as an achievement. But if I was to pick the proudest moment for 2018, it would have to be listening to an employee saying there was no better place to work than KMG. That brought about a huge smile.

Can you tell us what’s on the cards for KMG in 2019?

2019 is going to be our best year to date! We are continuously looking at ways to stay ahead in the industry and develop our service offering. To that end, technology clearly plays a large part, so we will be introducing more tools to ensure we can deliver even better services and results for our clients. We will also be introducing new channels of business. For example, there are rumours Whatsapp will start advertising in 2019 so watch this space. There are over 1.5 billion monthly users on that channel alone, so just imagine the opportunity for our clients.

Where do you see KMG in 10 years?

Gosh. 10 years feels like a long time away, especially with the speed of change in technology. Let’s not forget, we barely had iPhones in our hands 10 years ago. And now you cannot imagine life without your smartphone. I can see artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality picking up significant pace over the next decade, and advertising would naturally plug into that growth. I can see KMG being at the forefront of Performance Marketing across numerous advertising channels, old and new, globally, throughout that timeframe, with multiple offices, international expansion, and cutting edge technology to ensure we stay ahead of any competition.

What are you excited about in digital at the moment?

Growth. The pace at which we advance in the technology space is just so exciting. As the number of connected devices grows exponentially, we are continually experiencing ways to improve our way of life. There are currently over 20 billion connected devices in the world. This number is expected to grow beyond 75 billion by 2025, globally. That will create numerous opportunities along the way, as we consume more and more data along the way. It’s also very exciting to see how Artificial Intelligence continues to take major strides forward in development.

If you didn’t run the fastest growing agency in the UK and Ireland, where would you work?

Great question. My background is in finance and banking. But if I wasn’t running KMG, I would be running KMG’s no.1 competitor. There is no other place I would rather be right now. Outside the media and advertising industry, I develop properties in large scale with development partners. I’m currently working on developing 47 flats in Luton which as a town has seen amazing growth and development over the course of the last few years. The demand for housing continues to grow, especially in more affordable commuter zones outside London.

Give us an interesting fact about yourself.

I was a lead singer in a band for a period of 4 years during my youth! Clearly it didn’t work out, otherwise you would have seen me on MTV by now!

And Finally, in 3 words, how would your friends and family describe you?

Responsible, Visionary, Ambitious

An Interview with Carl

Meet Carl, the work hard play hard Digital Marketing Consultant that has been instrumental in the growth of his client’s businesses.

“Now over 90% of my leads come from the work that KAU Media do on all aspects of my digital marketing. I find that Carl is proactive rather than reactive and is always coming up with new ways for me to develop my business. I consider Carl to have been an integral part of the success of my business and would highly recommend him and KAU Media.”

Paul Prentice Family Law, CEO

Could you explain a little more about your position as a Digital Marketing Consultant at KMG?

As a digital marketing consultant, I am one of the go to reps between the client and the agency. I am there to guide and project manage the campaigns. Nurturing my valued clients, and getting the right new clients to join the KMG offering and start growing their business digitally.

Describe a typical working day for you as a Digital Marketing Consultant at KMG?

I spend my time prospecting for new clients through my network, affiliates and cold calling. I spend the other half of my time at KMG looking after my current campaigns, looking for new opportunities within them and looking at optimisation elements and liaising with other KMG team members to implement this. I arrange meetings with my clients, go and visit them and respond to client queries.

What made you go into digital marketing?

So, I come from a traditional marketing background. I worked for 15 years for Associated Newspapers. Over the last few years of being there, I saw first hand the shift in where the money was being spent towards digital so it was a natural progression to digital marketing.

Why do you like being a Digital Marketing Consultant?

I like being a Digital Marketing Consultant at KMG as I am always learning. Technology is always evolving and being in this position we get trained and updated on any new technology, ahead of the game. It is a varied career that is not all 100% office based so that suits me. What has been your favourite moment working at KMG?

Spending the day with my colleagues at Ascot this year and organising our company skiing weekend next year.

What is the biggest challenge of being a Digital Marketing Consultant?

We have to re-build that trust with companies that have been stung before by irresponsible agencies that give the whole industry a bad reputation. This makes our job tougher.

Social Advertising – it really compliments what we are doing on Google. Facebook have only just touched the surfaces and being a part of that progression is exciting.

I support the sales team on new business but my primary focus is managing post sale service and the team that manages the campaigns and their performance.
